AKRON RACERS CHARITIES TO HOST GAMES FOR THE CURE

By: John Urchek
AKRON, OH – The Akron Racers Charities will host the 2017 Games for the Cure Showcase at Firestone Stadium Friday, September 22 through Sunday, September 24 in cooperation with Cuyahoga Community College.  Five colleges and universities, including four from Ohio, will come together to aid in the Akron Racers Charities fight against breast cancer and the Muffins for Mammograms program.

Along with Tri-C, Malone University, Walsh University, Notre Dame College and Macomb Community College from Warren, Michigan make up the field for the 10-game showcase that will begin with Malone facing Walsh at 6 p.m. on Friday.  Macomb will meet Tri-C following the first game to wrap up Friday night.

Following a full slate of game on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding with a 7 p.m. start time, the showcase finishes on Sunday, September 24, with Tri-C meeting Notre Dame at 1:00 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with a valid ID.  All of the money raised through ticket sales goes directly to the Akron Racers Charities Muffins for Mammograms Program, which provides mammograms to men and women in the greater Akron community who otherwise could not afford them.

Notre Dame, who went 23-30 in 2016, is coached by Amy Kyler, who is in her 12th season with the Falcons.  Kyler’s #24 is one of three jerseys retired by the Akron Racers after four seasons with the team.  Kyler currently ranks sixth in franchise history in starts, strikeouts, complete games, wins and innings pitched.

Tri-C coach Bryan Komlos was named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2016. Malone and Walsh both compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.  Cavalier senior infielder Alissa Younes played her high school softball at Akron’s Archbishop Hoban High School.
